Abstract

Measurement units are not only scientific categories but also linguistic and cultural phenomena that embody a society’s historical experience and worldview. This study explores the lexico-semantic features of weight and mass units in Uzbek and English, focusing on both traditional and modern systems of measurement. While the metric system (gram, kilogram, ton) has become internationally standardized, Uzbek retains traces of indigenous units such as misqol and pud, whereas English preserves remnants of the imperial system (pound, stone, ounce). By employing comparative and descriptive methods, the research identifies semantic overlaps, lexical divergences, and cultural-specific connotations associated with these units in each language. The analysis highlights how linguistic representations of measurement units reflect broader cognitive models, metaphorical usage, and socio-economic realities. Furthermore, the paper addresses translation challenges that arise from differences between metric and imperial systems, particularly in scientific, technical, and literary texts. The findings demonstrate that a lexico-semantic comparison of measurement units contributes not only to terminological standardization but also to a deeper understanding of linguistic diversity and intercultural communication between Uzbek and English.
