THE ROLE OF DIGITAL COMMUNICATION IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH VOCABULARY

The rapid expansion of digital communication has considerably influenced the vocabulary, usage patterns, and expressive resources of contemporary English. Online platforms have created new communicative contexts in which speakers and users constantly adapt existing lexical items and introduce new expressions. This article investigates the role of digital communication in the development of contemporary English vocabulary, with particular attention to semantic change, abbreviation, word formation, and the spread of informal expressions. The study analyzes a number of digital-era lexical items and examines the mechanisms through which they become established in everyday communication. The findings indicate that digital communication functions not only as a channel for transmitting language but also as an active environment for lexical innovation. The research also emphasizes the importance of distinguishing between informal digital language and standard English in educational contexts.
