This article discusses the didactic foundations for developing students' cultural competencies through national musical heritage. Particular attention is paid to Deardorff's approach, as well as students' ability to distinguish the characteristic features of national melodies and tunes by ear, practically perceive rhythmic and melodic structures, master certain elements of the national performance style, and understand the historical, moral, and aesthetic ideas embedded in the content of songs.
