The article examines moral autonomy and universal human values. Historical-comparative, hermeneutic and normative methods distinguish authorship of choice, moral permissibility and conditions of responsibility. A model of responsible autonomy requires separate justification of individual decisions and institutional restrictions. Hypothetical cases illustrate its scope and limits. Its practical effectiveness requires empirical testing.
