This paper reviews the biotechnological production of bioplastics, focusing on microbial polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) and plant-derived polylactic acid (PLA). It discusses the metabolic pathways involved in microbial bioplastic synthesis, feedstock options including waste-derived substrates, and the environmental benefits of bioplastics compared to conventional petroleum-based plastics, including biodegradability and reduced carbon footprint.
