Stress is a key feature of English pronunciation that contributes to speech intelligibility and communication. Among its acoustic correlates, duration serves as an important marker of prominence. This article examines the temporal characteristics of English stress patterns, focusing on syllable duration, vowel lengthening, rhythm, and speech timing. It explores differences between stressed and unstressed syllables and their role in stress perception. Drawing on recent research in acoustic phonetics and prosody, the study highlights the importance of temporal cues in English stress and their relevance to phonetics, phonology, and second-language pronunciation teaching.
