Abstract

Functional constipation is a common disorder of gut–brain interaction characterized by difficult, infrequent, or incomplete defecation without an identifiable structural or biochemical cause. Women are affected more frequently than men, and the condition may substantially impair physical well-being, emotional health, work capacity, and quality of life. Growing evidence indicates that alterations in the composition and metabolic activity of the gut microbiota may be involved in the development and persistence of functional constipation. However, microbiota findings are not fully consistent across studies, and data relating specifically to women of reproductive age remain limited.
