Fitonymes are pairs of words that have a similar meaning but different connotations or nuances. They are important in linguistics because they help to highlight the subtle distinctions in meaning between words that are often used interchangeably. By studying fitonymes, linguists can gain a deeper understanding of the nuances of language and how words are used in different contexts. This can also help in language teaching and translation, as it allows for a more precise selection of words based on their specific connotations and nuances.
