THE ROLE OF PHYSIOTHERAPEUTIC INTERVENTIONS IN THE POSTPARTUM MANAGEMENT OF WOMEN WITH SOFT TISSUE BIRTH CANAL INJURIES

Abstract

Soft tissue birth canal injuries remain among the most common complications of vaginal childbirth and are associated with significant short- and long-term maternal morbidity. Perineal, vaginal, and cervical tears may contribute to persistent pain, impaired wound healing, pelvic floor dysfunction, urinary and fecal incontinence, sexual dysfunction, and reduced quality of life during the postpartum period. Contemporary postpartum care increasingly emphasizes comprehensive rehabilitation strategies aimed at restoring physical function and improving maternal well-being. Physiotherapeutic interventions have emerged as an essential component of multidisciplinary postpartum management, offering evidence-based approaches to enhance tissue healing, improve pelvic floor muscle function, reduce pain, and facilitate recovery following childbirth-related trauma. This review examines current evidence regarding the role of physiotherapy in the management of women with soft tissue birth canal injuries during the postpartum period. Particular attention is given to pelvic floor muscle training, therapeutic exercise, biofeedback, electrical stimulation, manual therapy, and individualized rehabilitation programs. The available evidence suggests that physiotherapeutic interventions contribute significantly to improved functional outcomes, enhanced quality of life, and reduced long-term complications among women recovering from obstetric soft tissue injuries.
