COOPERATIVE LEARNING AND SOCRATIC DISCUSSION AS DIDACTIC METHODS IN UNIVERSITY TEACHING: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF LEARNING OUTCOMES AND COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT

The predominance of lecture-based instruction in university settings continues to be challenged by a growing body of didactic research demonstrating the superiority of interactive, student-centered methods for developing higher-order cognitive skills, disciplinary reasoning, and transferable academic competencies. Among the most extensively studied active teaching methods are cooperative learning — structured peer interaction around shared academic tasks — and Socratic discussion — teacher-facilitated dialogue employing systematic questioning to deepen conceptual understanding and surface tacit assumptions. This paper presents a comparative analysis of these two didactic approaches, examining their theoretical foundations, implementation conditions, and documented effects on student learning outcomes in higher education. Drawing on a systematic review of 78 controlled studies and quasi-experimental evaluations published between 2013 and 2024, supplemented by qualitative case evidence from humanities, social science, and natural science programs across European and Central Asian universities, we analyze how cooperative learning and Socratic discussion differentially affect conceptual understanding, argumentation quality, academic self-efficacy, and student engagement.
