Abstract

Margaret Atwood is one of the most influential contemporary Canadian writers whose works explore gender, identity, power, freedom, and social inequality. One of the central elements of her literary works is the representation of women and their complicated relationship with society. Atwood’s female characters are often placed in situations where they have to confront social expectations, patriarchal values, discrimination, and limitations imposed on women. Through these characters, the writer demonstrates how social structures can influence women’s personal choices, psychological development, and understanding of identity. At the same time, Atwood presents women not only as victims of social oppression but also as individuals capable of resistance, self-discovery, and transformation. This article examines the representation of women in Margaret Atwood’s literary work and analyzes how female characters reflect and influence social life. Particular attention is given to women’s struggle for independence, the effects of patriarchal society, gender roles, psychological conflicts, and the importance of female identity. The study argues that Atwood’s female characters contribute to a deeper understanding of gender relations and encourage readers to reconsider traditional social values and expectations.
