Corpus annotation plays a fundamental role in contemporary linguistic analysis by enriching raw language data with structured linguistic information. Through annotation, corpora become more than large collections of texts; they turn into systematically organized resources that enable detailed investigation of phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic features of language. This article examines the concept of corpus annotation, its main types, methodological significance, and practical applications in linguistic research. Special attention is given to how annotation supports empirical analysis, improves research accuracy, and facilitates advances in applied linguistics and language technologies. The paper also discusses current challenges and future directions in corpus annotation.
