Abstract

Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures (PNES), also referred to as functional seizures, are paroxysmal events resembling epileptic seizures in outward appearance but lacking electrophysiological abnormalities on electroencephalography (EEG). In children, PNES are often manifestations of underlying psychological distress, trauma, or psychosocial dysfunction, including anxiety disorders, depression, adjustment disorders, or familial and academic stressors. Despite growing recognition of this phenomenon globally, PNES remains significantly underdiagnosed and frequently misclassified as refractory epilepsy. This misclassification results in inappropriate use of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), extensive but unnecessary neurological investigations, and prolonged delay in receiving effective psychological interventions.
