OCULAR SURFACE DYSFUNCTION IN YOUNG ADULTS: RISK FACTORS AND DIAGNOSTIC APPROACHES
Аннотация
Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) is traditionally considered a condition affecting older individuals; however, recent evidence indicates a growing prevalence among young adults. Increased digital device use, contact lens wear, refractive surgery, and environmental stressors have contributed to earlier onset and atypical clinical presentations of DES in this population. This review summarizes current knowledge on the epidemiology, risk factors, pathophysiological mechanisms, and modern diagnostic approaches for dry eye syndrome in young adults. Special emphasis is placed on functional visual disturbances, tear film instability, pain sensitivity, and binocular vision abnormalities. Recent advances in diagnostic tools, including tear film biomarkers, pain response evaluation, and functional tests, are also discussed. Understanding these factors is essential for early diagnosis and effective management of dry eye syndrome in young adults.
