FORMS OF ADDRESS IN ENGLISH YOUTH SPEECH: A LINGUOPRAGMATIC ANALYSIS

Address forms in English youth speech vary depending on the communicative situation, relationship between speakers, age, gender, and degree of familiarity. The analysis suggests that youth address forms are used for more than simply addressing someone. They can show familiarity and friendship, create a sense of solidarity and mark belonging to a particular social group. In some situations, the same forms may also be used for teasing, irony, or creating distance between speakers. Their meaning is therefore not always clear from the word itself and often depends on the context, the relationship between the speakers and the cultural background of the interaction. Address forms offer insight into how young people express and manage social relationships in everyday communication.
