Abstract

Vocabulary knowledge is central to language proficiency, yet traditional teaching methods often fail to motivate learners, particularly in rural EFL contexts where access to resources is limited. This study investigates the effect of mobile applications — specifically Duolingo, Quizlet, and Memrise — on vocabulary learning among secondary school students. Using an action research design, the study was conducted with 25 students over six weeks. Data were collected through pre- and post-tests, questionnaires, and observation checklists. Results indicate that the use of mobile vocabulary apps significantly improved students' vocabulary scores (from 58% to 79%) and increased learner motivation and independent study behavior. The findings suggest that integrating mobile applications into EFL vocabulary instruction can effectively supplement traditional teaching, even in contexts where digital literacy is initially low.
