LINGUOPRAGMATIC FEATURES OF IRONY IN LITERARY TEXTS

Literary art is one of the highest forms of reflecting human thought and the culture of society. It widely employs various stylistic devices that fulfill aesthetic impact, emotional-expressive, and socio-evaluative functions. One of these devices is irony. Irony is a linguistic phenomenon that outwardly appears positive or neutral, but in its inner meaning conveys criticism, sarcasm, or mockery. From a linguopragmatic perspective, the significance of irony lies in its ability to reveal the author’s hidden intention, create unexpected semantic associations in the reader’s mind, and add an additional aesthetic layer to the text. This article analyzes the linguopragmatic features of irony based on literary material, explaining its semantic, syntactic, and stylistic manifestations.
