THE ROLE OF NEEDS ANALYSIS, MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT, AND ASSESSMENT IN ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is a learner-centered approach to language teaching that focuses on meeting the specific academic and professional needs of learners. Unlike English for General Purposes (EGP), ESP aims to develop language skills relevant to particular disciplines and occupations. This paper examines three essential components of ESP programs: needs analysis, materials development, and assessment. Using a qualitative literature review methodology, the study synthesizes key findings from influential ESP research. The review demonstrates that needs analysis serves as the foundation of ESP curriculum design, materials development transforms identified needs into meaningful learning experiences, and assessment evaluates learners’ ability to perform authentic communicative tasks. The study concludes that the successful integration of these three elements is essential for effective ESP instruction and for preparing learners to function successfully in academic and professional contexts.
